Southern Alberta Institute of Technology was founded in 1916 and is the second oldest academic institution in Alberta. It is the first technological institute built with public funds in Canada. Located in Calgary, it offers more than 100 educational programs and 1,300 courses focused on technological development. Additionally, it provides corporate training for more than 200 private companies every year, making it the world leader in applied education.

Notable alumni

The list of outstanding South Alberta Institute of Technology’s alumni is long. However, here are some of the most notable ones:

  • Ted Godwin: Canadian artist known for his tartan-style paintings. He was awarded the Officer of the Order of Canada in 2004 for his recognized work.
  • Roy Kiyooka: Poet, writer, painter, and multimedia artist who won the Order of Canada for his literary work.
  • Colin Low: Famous screenwriter and filmmaker, renowned for his cinematic animations. His most prominent film was the City of Gold (1957), which received Bafta and Oscar nominations.


Life Off-Campus

The university is known for its sports activities, especially for its athletic team (the cross-country team stands out). South Alberta Institute of Technology also stands in the following sports: basketball, football, hockey, and volleyball. However, they have been most successful at curling. All of the university’s teams bear the Trojan’s name. The campuses are also located in an invaluable cultural center, such as Calgary, and therefore, bars, restaurants, and nightclubs set the tone for students’ extracurricular life.
